SteveLaBonne Posted March 25, 2002 Report Posted March 25, 2002 She has canceled her recital in Cleveland next month; the announcement cited complications from her hand injury last year. This sounds pretty scary- I'd hate to think that the career of a young violinist whom I greatly admire is in jeopardy. Anybody have more information?
Vivezza Posted March 25, 2002 Report Posted March 25, 2002 "Pamela has sustained an injury to her arm that has prevented her from practicing and playing for sustained periods of time." That is from the notice that I received from the Vancouver Recital Society recently. It gives no other information pertaining to Frank's injury.
Violinflu Posted March 25, 2002 Report Posted March 25, 2002 The last I heard (from about a month ago) she was gradually working up her playing again - and this was already after she had started trying to play again and rehurt her hand. She was being very careful the second time around to not reinjure herself. I hope she hasn't had more complications since then. I will find out more later this week, and let everyone know what the latest is.
HuangKaiVun Posted March 26, 2002 Report Posted March 26, 2002 When I met her, I was surprised to see that she was slightly taller than me but had SMALLER HANDS. I asked her if she was doing anything for exercises and her reply was "fingered octaves". Does anybody know if her injury was the result of a violint or violent injury?
Violinflu Posted March 26, 2002 Report Posted March 26, 2002 It was a freak household accident. She just banged it on the edge of a table in precisely the wrong way to screw everything up.

SteveLaBonne Posted April 10, 2002 Author Report Posted April 10, 2002 Thanks Jesse- sounds like grounds for cautious optimism. Glad she's not rushing it- as long as she gives herself time to recover fully, she has many years of delighting audiences still to come.

Although I didn't perfer her recording of Dvorak concerto and Brahms violin sonatas, but I do like her Mozart concerti, her Trout recording, and when I saw her live two years ago playing the Beethoven concerto with baltimore symphony. I still remember that Beethoven concert, vividly... mmm... it was "electrifying". The single best performance I've ever heard... I hope she'll return to playing soon, I really can't bear not being able to see her concerts. I think out of all living violinists. She's definitely one favourites.

I feel as though a huge part of me has been amputated. I have been inundating myself with recordings, that helps a teensy bit. Pamela will be back - and so will I. We won't let a freak accident sideline either of us for very long. Ava
Samira Posted April 11, 2002 Report Posted April 11, 2002 Today's Baltimore Sun had an article about the Baltimore Symphony's plans to tour Japan in September. The article noted that Pamela Frank is scheduled to appear in the tour...so I guess that's cause for optimism!
Violinflu Posted April 11, 2002 Report Posted April 11, 2002 According to my teacher (and herself) it's been extremely difficult for her - her violin was her means of expressing herself, and to suddenly not have it was like suddenly losing her voice. She has been trying other artistic avenues of expression - my teacher got her a paint set, and she has also taught more. She gave a masterclass here earlier in the year and gave private lessons to everyone in Ms. Givens' studio, which none of us will likely ever forget. She couldn't resist picking up my violin during the lesson and demonstrating, and I can assure everyone that when she returns she will be in better form than ever. I was astonished by how good she sounded after so many months away from the violin. Well... I asked about her again today at my lesson, and Ms. Givens said she was still working up her playing - she didn't mention any further complications, which is great news. She also said that "Pam" hadn't cancelled her summer concerts *yet*... so I get the feeling she is hoping to be performing again by summer - let's hope she can do so! Jesse

She played two performances of the Beethoven with my orchestra in fall of 2000 -- and I completely agree with your_piano_stud on this. I'd never heard her before, and it was incredible to play with her -- like chamber music!!!! And such a nice person.
