Shostakovitch violin concerto

Daisy,

I heard Midori play this about three weeks ago with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orch, and she did quite well. It is a gorgeous piece, especially under the baton of Mariss Jansons. I do have a bone to pick with Midori though. She moves around WAY too much, and I don't think she put all she had into the first two movements. But yes you are right, it is gorgeous. (by the way, it was the A minor)

Oistrakh was the dedicatee of this work, and prepared it in collaboration with the composer. Naturally, his recordings (I believe he recorded it twice) are definitive. Unfortunately, they also seem to be unavailable. At least I couldn't lay hands on one when I began to learn the piece.

It was only a matter of time before I posted this.

Get Vengerov. No-one plays the Passacaglia quite as passionately, not even Oistrakh.

Also if you get the chance to hear Repin (not the recording, live performance) he plays straight through into the Burlesque after the cadenza. Now that's something!!
