Maple chin rests

The answer to both of your questions would be to replace them. The chinrest is fine if you like it. Are you sure they are maple and not boxwood? Boxwood is a little harder and more consistant. You might be able to tell from the grain patterns and how badly the pegs are worn. If the pegs look like they have ridges from pushing against the pegbox, then they are probably soft wood that needs to be replaced with real boxwood or ebony. A visit to your favorite luthier is always a good place to start.
