I don’t think I agree with Cedar. Ball end strings have a little ball in a loop on the end that goes on the tailpiece. If you aren’t using fine tuners, the string comes up through a slot in the tailpiece with the ball on the end acting as a stopper. If you have a fine tuner tailpiece they are usually set up for ball end. Some E string fine tuners don’t have a slot for a ball end so you order a set with a loop E. Some E strings have a ball in a loop that you can remove to make them loop end.

I just use a fine tuner on the E. It only takes a loop end. I’m too lazy to put on a new fine tuner that will take either.
