I have a question about auditioning. I know that the best indicator for seat placement is how you play and whether or not you played well at the time of your audition (having a "good" day).

But what I want to know is if you think there is an advantage to going first, last or in between? I can see some advantage to first and perhaps last but none for auditioning in the middle of the group.

Your thoughts?

I've never found it to make a particular difference, to be honest.

If the audition day is particularly long, it might be better not to be last, just because the judge is more likely to be cranky.

Personally, I'd prefer to play in the middle of the pack. By then, they've worked out any logistical kinks in the audition process, but hopefully they haven't yet exhausted their patience with a parade of players.

As someone who is asked to judge at auditions, I would agree with the post above. Things are in a groove by the middle of the pack, and an "average level" has been established. If someone sounds really good at this point, they will be especially appreciated. However, I think that often times in a competitive audition situation, the outstanding performances are outstanding regardless of when they come in.

Thanks for your replies. I was asking becasue my son had his youth orchestra seating audition last night. He went in first and right after him, the orchestra went on a break. So it was about 15 minutes until the next one auditioned. I was just curious. He also plays the viola and the auditioner (?) auditioned the cellos first.
