Now the first question:

There are passages in studies particularnya where you can employ either open string or 4th finger.

The question is: will you use 4th finger or open string for the descending A in Kreutzer #8 where you have:

E1 G1# B1 E2 G2# B2 A2 F2# D2# B1 A F#

ascending ......... descending

Also, will you use 4th finger for the ascending E2 above?

The number I put there simply denotes an octave higher (and not the fingering) without necessarily notating it correctly according to the convention.

Second:

In Kreutzer #8, we also have a passage such as:

E1 G1# B1 E2 G1# B1 E2 G2# B1 E2 G2# B2 ...

See the sequence G1# B1 E2. By convention, should we hold the finger on fingerboard after the first sequence or release our fingers? Also, I use 4th finger for E2 even though it's ascending. Which fingering will you use for that E2?

For the descending A in the first measure, yes, use a 4th finger.

For the ascending "E2" just use an open string.

You can keep your fingers down if you want, but it isn't necessary. Actually, I wouldn't keep them down...it would be really uncomfortable, and because of the stretches, your fingers probably wouldn't stay on exactly the same pitch anyway.

And you can use 4th finger for that ascending "E2" because there's a string-crossing directly after it.

I use 0 for the ascending E2 in the first passage. I use 4 for the descending A. In the second passage I hold down the B1 for three notes (probably SHOULD but don't hold down the G1#), use 4 for the first ascending E2 and then shift up to the second E2 in the passage with the 1st finger.

In the first passage, I would use:

131024 313102

For the second sequence, I would use (this is the third measure, right?):

131431 and then shift up to 4th position on 1 for the remainder of the measure.

I would hold down 1st finger on the B, but fairly lightly -- I wouldn't particularly worry about doing so, it's just convenient to more or less keep it in place. I wouldn't hold down the G#, though. My fingers are, however, short; I tend to avoid holding down fingers unless there are no string crossings required.
