Trent_Hill
Sorry, couldn't resist on the subject line.... It looks like I'm going to be moving to Seattle to start a library degree program in the fall. I'd love to hear any information, tales, or suggestions regarding the life of the string player in Seattle--community orchestras, chamber groups, shops, recommendations for teachers, the state of the ethnic / Klezmer/ Eastern European music scenes, etc. Mucho thanko for any and all help, Trent
Ole Bull
You'll fit right in, by the sound of it.... where are you coming from? Plenty of community, semiprofessional etc orchestras here, as well as some eclectic groups - I think there are one or two that fit your description. If you're coming to study at the UW then you can audition for lessons.. sadly Steven Staryk has left town, but there is a violin program with good teachers.Several makers, shops in town, try them and see what you think - I'll give you my opinions in private if you want! Weaver
Trent are you the Trent whose sig line has the Simic quote? I love that line. I live in Washington, but not Seattle. Can't help you but I'm sure you'll get hooked up no problem. I think there is a group that meets once a week in Ballard (neighborhood in Seattle) and plays--I think it's bluegrass. They also have a potluck and contra dances. If I remember more, I'll you know. You are going to love Seattle and Washington! Teri
tarawa1943
Take the ferry to Bremerton and visit my luthier friend, James Morris. He is a great guy and an awesome luthier. You can find out more about him on my webpage. http://www.geocities.com/~geofiddle/shop.htm george

I'm coming from Clemson, South Carolina. My opinions of the place are best left private.... Just out of curiousity: Do you know of any good Greek/Klezmer/Arabic violinists or violin teachers in-city? Many thanks, Trent
Ole Bull
I think such players exist here in Seattle; whether they teach or not I'm not sure. No doubt you'll find you're way once you arrive (try an internet search, maybe something will come up. We're all wired up out here!). I don't get out as much as I used to, but I know of a few musicians who like to explore as you outline. A friend of mine just headed off to south Mexico to learn the fiddle style from the one remaining old guy left down there that still plays. In another lifetime I would have joined him... CJ
Trent, Sorry but I am killing myself laughing. I come from that area in SC and guess where I did my undergraduate work? Complete lack of a social/music/arts scene got you down? The marching band plays during half-time, what more could you want? LOL.
Christopher Reuning
I can suggest Raffael Carrabba as a highly skilled professional restorer. Amongst others, he worked in the esteemed workshop of J.&A.Beare in London and for Carl Becker of Chicago.
Ole Bull
Yes, I'm sure Carraba has a lot of experience... I'm not sure but it may be worth trying some of the smaller shops (such as Sten Olsen) too, might end up being cheaper. Also, I have found it useful to check out out-of-town shops such as Applebaum in Olympia. There are many good bowmakers in the area, and for violin-family makers I recommend David Van Zandt. He makes both modern and baroque instruments, and does a fine job. I believe there are other good makers too. I'll keep my ears open for that Greek Klezmer Bulgarian violin teacher!
