st_violin Posted April 3 Report Posted April 3 Hi everyone, I’m trying to get a clearer idea of the current retail value of violins by Sébastien Vuillaume. I understand his background within the Vuillaume workshop and that he later worked independently in Paris, but pricing seems quite opaque as most dealers list these instruments as POA. For genuine, well-attributed examples, what kind of retail range do they realistically achieve today, and how are they positioned in the market relative to other Paris school makers of the period?

Auction prices tell you nothing worth knowing, since you can't know the model, the condition, or the weather on the day ...

If so, it would seem that Sébastien Vuillaume sits somewhat below Nicolas François Vuillaume and Hyppolite Silvestre, while being closer in range to other ex-J.B Vuillaume workshop makers Nestor Audinot and Paul Bailly and Charles-Adolphe Maucotel. Does that sound like a fair way to position him in the current retail market?
martin swan Posted April 5 Report Posted April 5 More or less - I would say NF Vuillaume would be ahead of Hippolyte Silvestre, and that CA Maucotel would be more expensive than Audinot or Bailly ...
