nathan slobodkin Posted November 15, 2025 Report Posted November 15, 2025 Anybody have a source for finely powdered rosin or a satisfactory way to make it? I used to be able to buy Geipel rosin in a shaker can but no one seems to have it now. When I try to make it myself with a mortar and pestle rosin gets all over the shop and when it finally gets fine enough the powder starts sticking together and packing itself into a solid again! Help!
Christian Pedersen Posted November 15, 2025 Report Posted November 15, 2025 We use a cheap electric coffee-spice grinder.
uguntde Posted November 16, 2025 Report Posted November 16, 2025 I put the rosin in a folded paper and use a hammer.

Brad Dorsey Posted November 16, 2025 Report Posted November 16, 2025 I remember Lynn Hannings saying that she used the same rosin as the Red Sox.

Interesting! I will try that also. In my experience paper or cloth will puncture from the sharp larger pieces and leak coarse gritty pieces long before the fine dust that I am looking for is achieved.
The Violin Beautiful Posted November 17, 2025 Report Posted November 17, 2025 Th coffee/nut grinder works well and mimimizes dust. I’ve done it with mortar and pestle, but the grinder is faster. It can also be used to grind resins for varnish making.
Shunyata Posted November 18, 2025 Report Posted November 18, 2025 Coffee grinder. But you will need to clean it out with a solvent. Rosin will stick inside like crazy.
