Auction Question?

Why is it that every auction lately by Tarisio both T2 and Fine Instruments has violins by both Gadda and Lucci - often multiple violins?

Both of these makers must have been very proficient or at least their labels have made it into many fiddles. There are so many I would assume they are probably all fakes. Any thoughts?

How so? There seems to be many from both of these makers, hard to tell which are real and which are fakes

Ummm......first you have to define "real", and "fake".   As it has been explained to me, the situation can be complicated, and not just for those two makers.  I'd be cautious about screaming "Fake!" too much, and  I recommend more research.

I would think a violin with a label that was not made by that maker is a "fake"

A real violin has an original label from the maker on the label

Is that complicated? I don't think any one is screaming "Fake"

Yeah, it kinda is that complicated.

What about a violin that was made under the direction of a maker but is labeled by the maker as an authentic work of his/her? Real or fake?

How about a violin that was purchased in the white and then modified and completed by a maker and labeled as an authentic work of his/her? Real or fake?

I would think in both examples they are not all original by the maker so they are not

"real"-they are made by another hand and instead of made by as on the label they could be interpreted as mislabeled or fake not by the maker on the label

By that definition, 99% of the "Gadda" violins on the market would be fakes.

Thankfully (for a change), I'm not in a position where it matters, er, financially. 

And? I have different types; violin made by one person, violin in the white reworked by another person, small shop violin overseen by a "master", small? factory violin with a label...
