Purfling machine

My friend, Ted, made this machine for purfling. The cutter part pivots down. This thing is accurate and easy to use. I will try to add details of the motor and control part.

Looks like a brush-type, permanent magnet motor/spindle with a variable voltage DC power supply, many variations available on eBay.  Less obvious is how the arm pivots and how the plate edge distance is controlled.

It's controlled by the distance between the cutter and the light-colored piece of wood.

That doesn't seem right to me.  There should be a pin in the table surface, in order to function as a standard over-arm pin router.  I'd want to see a photo if this contraption in action.
