And btw, what do we make from the fact that the purfling at belly and bottom looks so very different?

That he had more difficulty with the maple than he did with the spruce.

Which one of the hes (or shes) being involved?

And, at least in my eyes, the purfling work at the maple looksmore balanced and refined, for the general quality level of the work, than the rough work at the spruce. This doesn't support your assumption.

Whatever.  What's your point?  The violin shows several characteristics of Salustri's work (like interior layout marks near the label), though the scroll's a little odd compared to most I've seen, and the F-hole notches are shallow.  By the date, this is one of his early ones.
