I've considered it.

Does it have whalebone purfling?

Its black and shiny without any noticeable fibre or grain, so is it whalebone?

Put it under UV, if it glows then it could be whalebone.

Sorry for the tardy replies. My device allows me to read MN, but not post while away from the shop. Kinda on purpose...

Not whalebone. I have maintained it for the past 25 or so years. It's provenance begins with the Hill's in the early 20th c. It has a beautiful Hill Certificate from the early 20th c. It came to the US through the Waddell Collection. The Hill cert says Stainer 1650's. The back gets referred to, lovingly, as a 3 pc back, wings upper and lower. It ended up on this coast via. Armin Schlieps.

It does need some work, but the owner is elderly and these things should perhaps be done between owners.

It says, "Be Nice or Leave". I am often asked what that means, and I tell customers that since it hangs directly in front of MY bench, it is mostly a Personal reminder...

Though the Hills had surely a big expertise, I'm doubting that Stainer ever made such scrolls and varnish (if both are original) and a very early Stainer from the 1650s I would expect to look more close to an Amati like the one in the Berlin museum. Is there something like a dendro, and what's the LOB?

Still looks like a two piece back to me, the upper and lower wing joined as one piece before the C bout was cut

Anyway how you are counting the pieces, there should be the row of dorsal pins in the center.

I have a copy in my bookshelf. I got it for free, because I rewiewed it for the strad magazin back then. It is a bit disapointing, and has long since been masively superceded by the catalogue of the exibition in schloss Ambras, writen by Rudi Hopfner for the kunsthistorische Museum

Does that make an 8 piece back?:)

yes BF, good catch, it's a different instrument.  But it's the same idea and maybe the same maker, maybe even the same maple log!  It sure is a lovely violin, thanks for posting.
