Dear Maestroneters, a student of mine bought a 3/4 bow that had been with the previous owner for 60 years. We would like to try to identify it, it only has france written on it and it looks quite old. What would be its value to you? I have a comparison video between it and a 4/4 carbon fiber bow and a 4/4 wooden bow.

Carbon bow between 256BRL to 400BRL(45$ to 70$) for us it's intermediate begginer bow.

Wooden bow is from Massaranduba wood 58$(Brazilian Redwood or Bulletwood) also a intermediate begginer bow.

the video its here now, with english subtitles(would be easier recorded in english but ive forgotten)

  • Niko Luthieria changed the title to Violin Bow id, has "France" wrote on it

Dear Niko,

I would say that the value of the bow is very ordinary bow close to zero or to the the price of the service (rehair relap straitening etc)

France (like Germany) exported inexpensive mass-produced trade bows. This appears to be one of them. It is not particularly valuable, though if it is in otherwise good playing condition, it would probably be worth re-hairing. If it needs other work or does not play well, then it may be a wall-hanger.

It could be worth something like that if it were properly fixed up.  But you would probably need to pay at least that much to get it fixed up.  This means that the bow has no commercial value in the violin world.  But someone might pay $25-50 to use it as a decoration or in the mistaken belief that it is worth more.
