M Alpert Posted April 25 Report Posted April 25 We have a situation with a nice old violin (no name, maybe English) with a stop length of 188 mm. The current string length is 322 mm. It needs a neck graft because the neck joint has failed, it's the original neck with an extended heel that has failed. The question is, should we try to compensate the string length with the neck by making a slightly longer neck (131-132mm)? What do you restoration maestros think? Or just stick with the standard 130 mm neck (which is what it is now.) Thanks in advance for your opinions!
jacobsaunders Posted April 25 Report Posted April 25 If it belongs to a customer, you will have to consult with them. If it belonged to me, I would make the neck 13, and try to get the bridge as near to 19,5 as possible, without looking ridiculous
Strad O Various Jr. Posted April 25 Report Posted April 25 or you could do the neck 12.8 and the bridge 192mm or 191mm
Bodacious Cowboy Posted April 25 Report Posted April 25 Are you sure it isn't a 7/8? What's the back length?
