Shunyata Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 I use a vise-less bench with bench dogs and pegs for securing my work. Overall I am very happy with this setup, but for some things a vise is helpful. I recently came across the Moxon vise, a portable vise that is dogged to your bench. Has anyone used this and have an opinion?
MikeC Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 I've never used a moxon vise but I would really like to have a tail vise on my bench.

Shunyata Posted April 15 Author Report Posted April 15 @jacobsaunders this is my workbench design. It is a tank and it serves me very well. (Mine is configured for left-handed use.). I don’t call it a table. :-)
donbarzino Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 It looks to be a nicely made but relatively light duty vice. The screws are of small diameter and the tightening handles don't give you much leverage. i suppose it would work well enough for most violin work but probably not for cello sized jobs.
Urban Luthier Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 The moxon vice is meant for dovetailing large boards
Brian in Texas Posted April 16 Report Posted April 16 What Urban Luthier said. A Moxon vise wouldn’t be very useful for violin making. Consider a quick release, wagon vise, or a leg vise.
