outofnames Posted April 10 Report Posted April 10 At orchestra practice last night we just finished a piece and all was silent…until the BANG rang out. I’ve never heard a bridge collapse before but now I have. The owner spent several minutes trying to get it repositioned and back in tune before continuing on. Personally, I’d want the instrument checked to ensure the sound post didn’t move but that’s just me. Overreaction? I’m still trying to understand how the bridge can just fall. I frequently check mine to make sure it’s not leaning, especially after I put new strings on am adjusting them frequently.
deans Posted April 10 Report Posted April 10 I would. But in my decades of playing I've never let that happen. As for the other guy, you could suggest to him to take it in, but maybe he doesnt even care.
violinsRus Posted April 10 Report Posted April 10 If one lets the bridge tip forward too far without ever straightening it, it can go down with a bang like it seems to have done in this case! I have also experienced it, pretty startling.
Brian in Texas Posted April 10 Report Posted April 10 I don't understand how someone can let a leaning bridge get that bad.

Rue Posted April 13 Report Posted April 13 I've also heard it happen. It's loud! And yes, do a quick visual check on the bridge every time before you play! ...and, if the soundpost was still in position, the bridge can be put back and rehearsal can carry on.
