arnalp Posted February 27 Report Posted February 27 Hi all here is another violin bow I will receive soon. Curious to get your thoughts on it. More pictures to come.
arnalp Posted March 1 Author Report Posted March 1 Hi all Another picture Also there is a Stentor stamp (did not see it). Does it seem peccatte-ish to you ? thanks
fiddlecollector Posted March 1 Report Posted March 1 Its nice maybe a member of the Simon family or FX Bazin ??? The stentor branded bows always look different whenever i see one. Any frog /button?
arnalp Posted March 11 Author Report Posted March 11 Just received the bow. here are additional pictures… also found a button, looks like they were born together… Thanks for your insights
fiddlecollector Posted March 11 Report Posted March 11 One observation ,the stentor bows ive seen the brands all had serifs
GeorgeH Posted March 11 Report Posted March 11 It is a pretty stick. French buttons most often (always?) have double collars, your button appears to be German with a single collar. How far does the octangular section of the stick extend from the butt end of the bow to where it transitions to round? Can you show a picture of where the lapping used to end compared to where the round section begins?
fiddlecollector Posted March 11 Report Posted March 11 Its definitely French , i still think FX Bazin possibly, the single collar or barely distinguishable second collar is common amongst Bazin and the Mirecourt Simon family makers.

fiddlecollector Posted March 11 Report Posted March 11 Compared to a Simon (probably N. Simon or N. Simon (Fils de Jean) who both worked in Mirecourt as opposed to Pierre Simon who worked in Paris.(though the throat on the frog is often seen on P. Simon as well)

I was under the impression it was JTL...? Although you have a good point, these stamps are very different from the OP, so is it even worth considering. 12 hours ago, arnalp said: also found a button, looks like they were born together Did the button come with the bow, or did you "find" it in your miscellany box? I agree, looks like a pretty good match, though maybe a bit thicker? Both do look French to me..
arnalp Posted March 12 Author Report Posted March 12 @M Alpert the button was in the violin box with the bow. I can just only assume it originally was on the bow.

The Stentor brand was a budget line of instruments usually sold through JB Vuillaume ,the Violins etc.. were supplied by Nicolas Vuillaume and made by various makers . The bows were usually made by the well known JB Vuillaume associated makers or their workshops. The Pajeot shop made alot of the early ones , later ones ive seen look like JJ Martin and other makers. This is my understanding ,as information is quite sketchy. Photo attached of a Pajeot shop "Stentor" Not to be confused with the Stentor brand in the UK which came around in 1927 in London.

I dont know , the brand is often on the opposite side to usual (as yours appears to be) ,so when they come up for sale the brand is often not shown in photos. Your bow stick looks very well made (particularly the head chamfers), most Stentors i see are quite rougher in appearance and look quickly made.

Thanks for the correction, shows to go you that I should do my homework before blurting Now I even remember a N Vuillaume Stentor violin I saw once... And this Pajeot shop bow looks very nice. Funny what they call Stentor these days! Horrible things.
martin swan Posted March 12 Report Posted March 12 We had a Stentor branded bow that was certified as a Pierre Simon. But i agree with fiddle collector this looks more like Mirecourt - the head seems very reminiscent of Simon Fr., though I think there were at least 2 makers using that brand.
arnalp Posted March 18 Author Report Posted March 18 Hi all Raffin experts have confirmed it is a Simon FR stick, with a Bazin button. thanks !
