I have never seen a Geissenhof with a "FG" stamp on the button, where both the "F" and the "G" respetively both have a full stop (Am. "period")

Thanks Jacob. So a fake then?

yes, a hansome cello though!

I thought so. I'll see how it plays and sounds. If the estimate is correct it might be worth it. Thanks again for your comments

I wouldn't really have described this as a fake, though maybe it's a matter of semantics.

It looks to me like an unusually attractive cello of the earl C19 that someone later added this "F.G." brand to - for me a fake would be something made to be passed off as a Geissenhof.

The rather thin and dry appearing varnish reminds me once again of (a very personal) Mittenwald 19th century work. The belly has apparently a double soundpost crack, the ribs possibly some worm damage, which should be mentioned in the condition report (?) and reflected in the pricing.

Thank you. I'll get a condition report, of course. So you dont think its Austrian?

In fact, these regions were so close and related that I would not know how to distinguish it, especially not at such an idiosyncratic model like here, at least not without a comparable reference. Therefore I didn’t write „it is“ but it does remind me of the style. Won‘t make much of a difference anyway.
