John_Philp Posted February 13 Report Posted February 13 Dear Maestronet Community: I've been searching for bridge material for a 'cello for weeks now and it doesn't even exist. Factories are selling pre-stamped bridge blanks of varying grades, ranging in price from $10.00 to $250.00, so the material must be being produced, but I can't find it anywhere uncut. I want to carve my own bridge from scratch and burn my logo into it - seems like that should be possible. Does anyone have any leads? Thank you in advance for your guidance... ~ John
HoGo Posted February 13 Report Posted February 13 I'd look around forests No, really the bridge manufacturers probably prize their stock so they won't sell unworked wood. But you can get wood from tonewood sellers like here what my first google search gave: https://www.tonewoodforviolin.com/bridges/bridge-maple-wood/

donbarzino Posted February 13 Report Posted February 13 Violin or cello bridges and violin or cello backs are made of maple wood of the same species as far as I know. The tighter grained pieces with minimal flaming are chosen and cut as bridge wood or low grade backs. The highly flamed pieces are reserved for high grade backs.
JonGeo Posted February 13 Report Posted February 13 I get mine from tonewoodforviolin.com good prices and this month they have a free shipping deal.. every month they do a different deal and they are usually pretty good. You can also buy other supplies there but they mainly do wood

In reality, the lowest part of the trunk would be suitable for bridges (more compression and greater density) while the highest part after the first meter, a meter and a half of the tree would be better for backs, less so for bridges. But it is not possible to understand if this refinement is respected.
joerobson Posted February 15 Report Posted February 15 I have bridge stock. PM me for details. on we go, Joe
