Chamberlain Posted February 12 Report Posted February 12 I have this bow that came with a violin and another bow stamped Leon Pique. I can’t make this one out and wondering if anyone has an idea? I’m guessing German trade stamp with maybe Paris and Germany at the end? Also any tips to be able to read them better? I am familiar with how to do the bow restoration technique to be able to cover and protect them but not sure if there’s anything to help read them better. Thanks again for your help!
Brad Dorsey Posted February 12 Report Posted February 12 I’m pretty sure the stamp ends with GERMANY; I can’t make out the rest. But whatever the stamp says doesn’t really matter, because it’s obviously a cheap workshop bow.

Maybe a cheap plastic tube float though! Just more frustrating to not be able to make it out and wondering if there was a technique to bring them back a little incase I do come across one like this on a nicer bow.
J-G Posted February 13 Report Posted February 13 As Brad said, it doesn't really matter what the stamp says. What matters is how they work as bows. Why not hair them up and find out?
GeorgeH Posted February 13 Report Posted February 13 It has been rumored the Otto Hoyer made some of the bows stamped with “Leon Pique”.

Why not hair them up and find out? Yes I completely agree! I will put it on my deflection gauge and do a weight and balance estimate. If it has potential I will put it in the players pile! These are part of my charity bows that I’m working on. It just bothered me I couldn’t figure it out and wondered if there was some trick I didn’t know about to help read them.

The stamp didn’t look like the nicer other ones I saw. I think others were stamped in the French manner and more in the center. But not sure.
Hempel Posted February 13 Report Posted February 13 The OP bow is stamped "Vuillaume A Paris Germany." Just about the most apocryphal stamp possible.
