Hello Everyone,

I’m currently looking to upgrade from my beginner violin to something more suitable for an intermediate player. I’ve been playing for about three years now, and while my current instrument served me well, I feel that I’ve outgrown it and would benefit from a violin with better tonal quality and playability.

Here’s a little background to help guide your advice:

  • My budget is around $1,500-$2,000, though I’m open to stretching a bit if it makes a significant difference.
  • I primarily play classical music and occasionally explore some folk and contemporary pieces.
  • I’ve started working on intermediate-level repertoire such as Bach’s Partitas and Vivaldi’s Concertos.
  • I’ve never purchased a violin directly from a luthier or shop—my current instrument was a gift.

I’d love to hear your recommendations on the following:

  1. Are there specific brands or luthiers within my budget range that you’d recommend?
  2. Is it worth considering older violins in this price range, or should I focus on newer instruments?
  3. How important is the bow in terms of upgrading? Should I prioritize investing in a better bow alongside the violin?
  4. Any tips on testing instruments in person to find the best fit for my style and needs?

Lastly, if anyone knows of reputable violin shops or dealers in the [insert location, e.g., New York City area], I’d greatly appreciate suggestions.

Scott Cao 750 is a no brainer around here, they almost always play well. Or whatever equivelant your local shop carries, maybe their own brand name. If for whatever reason you dont want a Chinese instrument, you'll have to find a shop that has a good selection of older Geman trade instruments to sort through, but I have no suggestion for a particular brand or make

I'm not AI and wouldn't have any qualms about seconding the 750 series, lord knows I've set up and sold enough of those the past 25 years. They're certainly not the only thing to try in that price range, but one worth checking out.
