Wood Butcher Posted January 4 Report Posted January 4 Looks like a beetle hole, with a surrounding stain. It will be something that happened while the tree was living. Is the texture of the stained area different? Does it feel soft? Some stains can be improved with oxalic acid, but it is very unlikely to vanish.
Rue Posted January 5 Report Posted January 5 Personally? I love it! It's a beauty mark! I also love how it squiggles. It's part of the history of the tree - and now part of the patina, as far as I'm concerned.
Matthew_Graesch Posted January 5 Report Posted January 5 I actually love it when wood has unexpected features like this....but I am also not selling instruments, so I suppose one's excitement would vary with the intent for the instrument. I personally think it'll look fantastic once finished.
ernym Posted January 6 Report Posted January 6 Yup it's a beetle track and you can see the exit hole. I had the same surprise once with some red maple. I ended up not using it.
Randall The Restorer Posted January 6 Report Posted January 6 On 1/4/2025 at 6:00 PM, Dr. Mark said: Call it a feature and move on. Amen to that.
