Maybe here is the Strad Secret, this single small drop of varnish that one would concentiously try to remove. And now it is a very valuable drop of varnish.
Alto Ego Posted January 12 Report Posted January 12 What make and model of strings are on this instrument?
Kev Chanot Posted January 12 Report Posted January 12 On view with Sotheby's London at varying times between 10th and 15th January.
Swing Monkey 1 Posted February 7 Report Posted February 7 The violin sold for $10 million. With buyer’s fees, the price came to $11.25 million. It appeared to me to have Peter Infield on the G & D strings and Evah Pirazzi on A & E.

GeorgeH Posted February 7 Author Report Posted February 7 Prices in the world of fine arts aren’t setting records like they were a few years ago.
Swing Monkey 1 Posted February 8 Report Posted February 8 How much did the Guarneri "del Gesù" that Anne Akiko Meyers plays go for? I think it was more than the Strad auctioned today.
Schwartzinc Posted February 8 Report Posted February 8 2 hours ago, GeorgeH said: Prices in the world of fine arts aren’t setting records like they were a few years ago. Actually they are …just look at the last old masters sale.. top lots exceeded their estimates and 70% sold.

Only 70% sold is not very good and exceeding estimates does not mean record-setting prices. The fine art market has cooled down quite a bit. That is what the big sellers are saying.

I’ll admit 70% sold is not so great… but the old master art market in 2025 out performing conservative estimates IS. Just compare that to the sale of this Strad today… not so good.

I’m just curious to hear your thoughts on it…. I think it should’ve done better? Or do you think it was a good price?
matesic Posted February 8 Report Posted February 8 Why exactly is an astronomical price "good" unless you're an investor who values profit over any musical consideration?

A great deal can be said if one has intimate knowledge of the instrument; condition vs price point; comparative to other Strads in both the 'golden age' period and earlier....... the analysis can go on and on.....

I don't think anyone's making a moral judgment, but it's bad news for all those collectors and foundations who bought their Golden Period Strads for a good deal more ...

Potter Posted February 9 Report Posted February 9 As a parent of a current NEC prep student and possible/ probable NEC college student who will need financial aid, a bit of a dissapointment. Would have been nice if it had met expectations and the schools cup would be flowing over. 10M vs 16M will make a big difference to a relatively small school.
