Thx for the links.

Maybe here is the Strad Secret, this single small drop of varnish that one would concentiously try to remove. And now it is a very valuable drop of varnish.

The violin sold for $10 million. With buyer’s fees, the price came to $11.25 million.

It appeared to me to have Peter Infield on the G & D strings and Evah Pirazzi on A & E.

Well below what Sotheby’s hoped for!

Prices in the world of fine arts aren’t setting records like they were a few years ago.

Actually they are …just look at the last old masters sale.. top lots exceeded their estimates and 70% sold.

Only 70% sold is not very good and exceeding estimates does not mean record-setting prices. The fine art market has cooled down quite a bit. That is what the big sellers are saying.

I’ll admit 70% sold is not so great… but the old master art market in 2025 out performing conservative estimates IS.  Just compare that to the sale of this Strad today… not so good.

George what are your thoughts on how this Stradivarius did at auction? I’m just curious to hear your thoughts on it…. I think it should’ve done better? Or do you think it was a good price?

I think it appears to have been a fair auction where it sold to the highest bidder. What more is there to say?

A great deal can be said if one has intimate knowledge of the instrument; condition vs price point; comparative to other Strads in both the 'golden age' period and earlier....... the analysis can go on and on.....

Why exactly is an astronomical price "good" unless you're an investor who values profit over any musical consideration?

Now that is a can of worms that I am not going to open... ;)

I don't think anyone's making a moral judgment, but it's bad news for all those collectors and foundations who bought their Golden Period Strads for a good deal more ...

As a parent of a current NEC prep student and possible/ probable NEC college student who  will need financial aid, a bit of a dissapointment. Would have been nice if it had met expectations and the schools cup would be flowing over. 10M vs 16M will make a big difference to a relatively small school.
