Guido Posted November 9 Report Posted November 9 Not all but some makers of the Kloz family have what seems to be a centre notch in the far side pegbox wall. See first photo. I always thought this had to do with some method of neck alignment during construction... anyone know details? Likewise, Degani's hollow fingerboard (and nut) allowing to peer though (or insert a rod)... anyone know what he actually did there? And finally, the second picture, a notch in a place I have never seen before. Maybe it's just damage, maybe it's intentional. Anyone seen that before?

Anyone seen that before? I don't recall seeing one like that before. I think it must be intentional because it looks original, and because it's too precisely aligned with the central ridge to be accidental.

These three notches in the pegbox north are described as a feature established by Georg II Kloz, and adapted by his pupils, f.e. Aegidius and members of the Hornsteiner family. I would see it related to the Chapelle at some Vieux Paris and a few other makers (S.Serafin). I also remember having see a similar notch at the end of rear of the pegbox at a Hornsteiner violin, but have no idea about the purpose.
