wvfiddleguy Posted November 8 Report Posted November 8 I have a very nicely made trade instrument with a Gagliano label, but in addition to the label is another label with 6675W....I assume this to be a catalog model or inventory number. My question: does anyone know what supplier may have listed this instrument in their catalog? I assume Sears, Montgomery Ward, or something similar. It would be fun to see it in an old catalog. It was bought by a local family for their young daughter back in the early 1920's. Appreciate any links to old catalogs. Thanks.
Brad Dorsey Posted November 8 Report Posted November 8 The best-known available collection of reprints of old violin catalogs is "Violin Identification and Price Guide, Book 3" by Roy Ehrhardt, 1978. This book contains information from, and facsimiles of, catalogs of United States violin dealers, originally published from 1896 to 1969, that offered antique violins for sale. But none of the reproduced catalogs contain a violin with the number 6675.

The second label may not necessarily be original to the instrument (incidentally, neither might the first label). It might have been put in as a shop’s inventory number. The majority of trade instruments from the heydays of Markneukirchen and Mirecourt production were never serialized. You’re more likely to learn about the violin’s origin by posting good photos of it here.
