Tiennou74 Posted November 4, 2024 Report Posted November 4, 2024 Saw this one go up for sale for 175$ To my eyes it looks nicer than that but maybe I’m too new to know what to look for
Woodland Posted November 4, 2024 Report Posted November 4, 2024 Well, difficult to say without seeing/hearing it in person, but my impressions are that it’s an amateur handmade violin, possibly American. A luthier would have to see it in person to decide specifically how much it needs to make it playable.
violinsRus Posted November 4, 2024 Report Posted November 4, 2024 I agree with Woodland's assessment, possibly with a prefab scroll/neck.
deans Posted November 4, 2024 Report Posted November 4, 2024 I agree with Woodland, hand made with posiibly a comercial scroll/pegbox. (just as I am posting I saw the same from violinsrus) Before giving it to a beginer I would check for any unusal dimensions that could make it frustrating, and make sure it speaks fairly easily.
jacobsaunders Posted November 4, 2024 Report Posted November 4, 2024 I can't see, from the pictures provided, what the violin is, and am surprised that anyone else can
violinsRus Posted November 4, 2024 Report Posted November 4, 2024 Those snot-marks in the back wood are characteristic of American red maple I believe, others can correct me. I think I'm seeing the same in the ribs, but not in the neck. The purfling, outline, arching, edgework, look like an amateur hand, but it's just a guess. You probably don't see too much amateur American work over there. :-) At least we can surmise it's not Viennese!
Tiennou74 Posted November 7, 2024 Author Report Posted November 7, 2024 I purchased the violin The label reads: "Uranus' Made by Frank M Bailey West Auburn, ME
