Michael K. Posted October 12 Report Posted October 12 www.getstradivariussound.com I found a full-page advert about it in the November The Strad magazine "This book is a step-by-step guide to transforming the sound of any violin into Stradivarius sound". A book for $49 on Amazon. Ohhhh....no...somehow we missed something, right? I don't want to comment further on this, I'll leave that up to you now.
Christopher Jacoby Posted October 12 Report Posted October 12 Michael do you think THIS book will have pictures of your violins labeled as Strads in it?? That was my favorite thing that happened for years
Davide Sora Posted October 12 Report Posted October 12 Could it be that the author of the book (Alvin Fry) is a relative of this Jack Fry? https://youtu.be/3xahK9MMlGo?si=s7xYDLDWUhAPW1Ql&t=1627 If so, he will want to try to catch some fish with his father or grandfather's theory.

Don Noon Posted October 12 Report Posted October 12 More on Alvin Fry; no obvious connection to Jack Fry other than the name: https://www.ksdk.com/article/entertainment/television/show-me-st-louis/violinist-alvin-fry-sets-the-tone-when-it-comes-to-building-instruments/63-55d29d0b-11d3-4be2-a1ef-584e6e7d4e1d I haven't read the book, but the things available on the internet maxed out my skeptometer. Oh... it was Fryd just from the book title.

HoGo Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 So you snob violilin makers still have few weeks to get rid of your businessess before they are worthless, we're going to turn our markies into Strads for mere $49! Sounds like advertising of motivational/investment books that the poor losers buy by truckloads and the only guy who wins success/earns is the author (and publisher).

Mr. Bean Posted October 14 Report Posted October 14 Now I am waiting for the next book in the series, since I would like to know how to sell my Markie, converted in a real Strad, for several milions
Matthew_Graesch Posted October 14 Report Posted October 14 I'm holding out for Volume 2 of the series: "How to Get Guarnerius Sound"
HoGo Posted October 14 Report Posted October 14 Have you seen the website of his? Some BOLD claims there! Sadly no pricelist.

Andreas Preuss Posted October 14 Report Posted October 14 Often I think some people get hypnotised by ‘Stradivari’. (Whatever this word means to them) I prefer to make MY OWN and original violins with their OWN typical sound. In the art world artists replicate old masters such as Rembrandt only as exercises only to develop further their own ideas eventually landing at new and fresh fascinating visual ideas.
martin swan Posted October 14 Report Posted October 14 This book’s publisher (I assume it’s self published) has a full page advert in The Strad this month. All a bit sad really …
MikeC Posted October 16 Report Posted October 16 50 bucks is fairly cheap these days.. who's going to buy it and give us a review? Lets see... umm 50 for a book or a meal of dolmades and chicken curry... hmmm....
catnip Posted October 19 Report Posted October 19 Has anyone read the book? I heard his main "modification" is a patented laminated bassbar, a bit shorter and more angled.
MikeC Posted October 19 Report Posted October 19 I'm on a diet so I skipped the dolmades and curry. yes, catnip you are right about the bass bar and its made from a specific wood species. Also specific back and top plate grads, not out of line with what we would consider standard thickness.

The price is on Alvin Fry’s other website: https://www.2ndchancefiddles.com/ or archived at: http://web.archive.org/web/20240918055558/https://www.2ndchancefiddles.com/ For $1,500 he will regraduate the top, replace the bass bar, and reset the neck. There is a special introductory offer of $500 for the first ten instruments. He says that the service is intended for inexpensive instruments and recommends not regraduating violins worth more than $2,000, since doing so will likely diminish the resale value.
HoGo Posted October 21 Report Posted October 21 Oh thanks, that exotic font on his web is hard to read. I wonder what would he do if I sent him my old junker that is already way too thin...
