Hi, I have this violin and would like to know more about it's origin. Is it one of the "usual" or could it be Austrian? The fotos show also some repair on the ribs and top edge. The instrument to me appears quite sound, the top has a repaired short crack on lower bout. Both top and back plate show a rather high arching. Thanks for your expert help!Top.pdfBack.pdfside left.pdfside right.pdfscroll left.pdfscroll right.pdfscroll top.pdfscroll back.pdfFF.pdfKnob.pdfKnob 1.pdfrib repaired.pdfrib edge, top repaired.pdf

Nice old violin around 1800 or a little earlier, probably from Mittenwald or a related school.

That would include Austria... why are you asking specifically about that?

Agree with that except that the scroll looks much newer.

In the third picture I think I am seeing that there is a groove in the top for the ribs.

The upper treble corner, where that groove is visible, is repaired (half-edged), the others look quite normal. Usually such grooves are in the bottom, not the belly plate.

@Rothwein "It looks as if the ribs were raised. ? "

That's what I originally thought too, when I saw the rib close to the neck. But a photo taken from inside clearly shows a rib repair and a rather new neck block, I think.

It's common practice to replace the neck block, if major structural repairs are required in that area, which has apparently been the case. Why, who knows, but I would assume failure/ excessive wear in the button/ neck joint area.

I agree with previous opinions, looks like a nice old violin, possibly Mittenwald. The scroll looks both somewhat newer and a different style, ie. not older Mittenwald (to my eyes). Not Markie. Unlikely Viennese.

@jacobsaunders might have a well- informed opinion about this sort of fiddle, I would think.
