Clara kim Posted August 30, 2024 Report Posted August 30, 2024 (edited) Hello, I am Clara from South Korea.Yesterday, I found this cello at an old musical instrument store. I heard that this cello is from Germany. The seller would like to sell this cello for about $2000.Is that a reasonable price?Sincerely, Clara Edited August 30, 2024 by Clara kim
jacobsaunders Posted August 30, 2024 Report Posted August 30, 2024 It looks like something relatively new that someone has distressed a bit to make it seem older. One can be certain that it isn’t from 1907. I don’t know about Korean prices, but if $2000 is the going rate for a new Chinese cello there, then I suppose it’s hard to argue
Sammyo Posted August 30, 2024 Report Posted August 30, 2024 Alexandre Hillairet is a luthier in London. That's not how he spells his name and he was not alive in 1907 but I suppose there could be a connection (it would be quite odd to try to fake an instrument in his name as his business is mostly in repairs and he is not a prolific maker of cellos).
Ron1 Posted September 2, 2024 Report Posted September 2, 2024 $2,000 is not a reasonable price for this instrument.
Brad Dorsey Posted September 2, 2024 Report Posted September 2, 2024 Is $2000 not reasonable for the seller or not reasonable for the buyer? Is $2000 too high or too low?
Randall The Restorer Posted September 2, 2024 Report Posted September 2, 2024 I am not a cello expert. I do, however, have over half a century experience studying aged wood. The wood in the photo of the label does not look 120 (one hundred twenty) years old. It probably does not smell that old either. I have found that each tonewood species gives off its own particular aroma after aging for many years. This instrument is or was presented as a lie - by someone. Who knows what else may be wrong with it - structurally or sonically or legally or morally? In my mind that makes it worse than firewood. Be patient. Be honest and truthful in all your dealings. Seek out dealers who are the same. You will find an instrument that is truly “worth” more than the $2000 you might pay for it.
