Mrsmouse Posted August 14, 2024 Report Posted August 14, 2024 Good evening, I inherited my Grandad's violin around 9 years ago and this is the first real chance I've had to have a decent look at it. I have no idea where it's from or how old it is. But I've used the 'how to photograph a violin for identity' thread to take these photos. Fingers crossed someone can give me some pointers. Thanks in advance
FiddlinDave Posted August 15, 2024 Report Posted August 15, 2024 I wouldnt be sure but it appears to be a Mirecourt (French) JTL made student violin from the early 1900s. It would be of dubious quality. Once the real experts see your question you should get a more complete answer.

Dulcis e Fortis was a JTL brand (Jerome Thibouville-Lamy, a huge production company early 1900s)
GeorgeH Posted August 15, 2024 Report Posted August 15, 2024 It looks like a medio fino “waffle violin” type to me.

martin swan Posted August 15, 2024 Report Posted August 15, 2024 Seems like a pretty typical "Dulcie" to me ergo Mirecourt, however confusing it is in some details

Looking inside through the end pin holes, there are features like no flat areas where the plates meet the end blocks, seams often not being flush, rather thin areas in the centers, often a sort of bulk at the middle seams and some more. There were several threads in the past discussing the topic.
