Shunyata
Up to now. I have always stopped the fluting around 6 o-clock. I would like to try to extend it all the way back. I think I have heard that people use knives to do this. What shape of knife? Any suggestions on technique or approach?
jacobsaunders
The main trick is to make the throat wide enough It is one way of recognising antique scrolls. Some scrolls looked at from the profile are like someone with his chin down on his chest, others (Testore for instance) have their chin well up. Much new making has the “chin” so close to to it’s chest, that a 6 o’clock scroll is inevitable
Michael Darnton
I use the same long, sweeping-point 12 mm knife I use for cutting cello bridges. The sharpened part is 40 mm or so long, so the tip is quite thin and extended.
MikeC
What Michael said. Use a long knife and cut cross grain.
