Strange Violin Lion Head

Recommended Posts

Hello. I have this very strange lion head violin and would like to know if this is familiar to someone. I've seen a lot of violin lion heads but never this type. Is it a joke? Or maybe it is really a serious attempt to carve a head? It certainly looks archaic but I'm not sure it is really so old. I look forward your inputs.

I think it looks so strange just because it was carved very quickly so that it could be sold very cheaply to be put on the lowest grade of violin which would eventually be sold very cheaply.  The guy who carved it probably did a half-dozen or a dozen every day.

It looks like an amateur made head to me and not particularly old. I've come across a few anomaly's like this.

I'm very interested in all these animals heads.

I have a complete disaster of a violin at home which is a composite of a crazy amount or parts, however, what remains of the top seems to be 18th century with all Italian matches according to dendro (maybe tyrol). The head seems to be of pear or some other fruit wood and is a very nice lion head of a type that looks halfway familiar but yet at the same time a type which I have not encountered before.

the very crude carving of the OP is some kind of one off from a complete amateur, not a professional churning out 12 scrolls a day IMHO

Is it possibly a home made convertion of a regular scroll? Pictures of the rest of the violin whould be interresting!

Here there are some photos. I'm afraid the body matches exactly the head...

Jacob Stainer made some violins with lion heads, I believe. This instrument looks German by its colour, and it may be a mass produced one, possibly loosely based on a Stainer with high arches?

I am no expert on this, however.

In Norway Salve Håkedal makes hardangerfiddles with lion heads. I think it may be one of his trademarks.

since you have evidently taken the top off, you could show us a couple of pictures of the inside work
