danrobb Posted March 7, 2024 Report Posted March 7, 2024 Hi, I’m wondering if anyone can give me any info on this old violin. It has a nice dark tone
Blank face Posted March 7, 2024 Report Posted March 7, 2024 August Wilhemj https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_Wilhelmj was a German violinist, obviously very successful in merchandising. He also lent his name to a bow model by HR Pfretzschner. The violin is a rather low grade product of the Markneukirchen/Schönbach cottage industry, but in a reasonable well condition. There are often names like Paganini, Ole Bull and others branded below the button, too.
Dr. Mark Posted March 7, 2024 Report Posted March 7, 2024 Thanks for posting that - I have a similar violin with an identical Wilhelmj stamp and shorthand decoration that I got from my grandfather, and I've been thinking of asking about it. It looks like your varnish has some additional artificial aging.
IBK Posted March 7, 2024 Report Posted March 7, 2024 Judging from the cut of the FF holes, it looks like it could have been made in the shop of Friedrich August Glass, Klingenthal
Spelman Posted March 7, 2024 Report Posted March 7, 2024 Sorry for the slightly tangential question but how do you pronounce Wilhelmj? Is the "j" silent?
Ron1 Posted March 8, 2024 Report Posted March 8, 2024 I think the name may be Wilhelms rather than Wilhelmj.
