KeiranC Posted March 6, 2024 Report Posted March 6, 2024 Hi all- is there any way to reliably tell if these 3 sets of pegs might be from the 18th century, or if they’re later copies? They do have quite a bit of wear and the boxwood seems good and old to me. Thanks!

Gtone Posted March 6, 2024 Report Posted March 6, 2024 They could be J J Stadlmann? they're all very nice ,where did you find?
JacksonMaberry Posted March 7, 2024 Report Posted March 7, 2024 Pretty nice looking pegs. I'd be interested in patterns if you decide to make any.
A432 Posted March 7, 2024 Report Posted March 7, 2024 Beautiful old pegs ! Note that, like maple fingerboards stained black, these were also stained (imitating ebony). Re-finished fiddles show evidence (darker color, oftentimes) in protected,,difficult-to-sand areas like snail creases, these show black stain/dye/paint on their shafts. An often overlooked detail FWIW RodneyDangerfield432

What we're seeing in the photos could just as easily be old dirt and rosin accumulation, just like that seen on other parts of old instruments.
Jeffrey Holmes Posted March 7, 2024 Report Posted March 7, 2024 Nice pegs. I love seeing old ones... or finding them! Eric Meyer is who I might ask about the period. The following were from an early Kennedy cello w/ a modified original neck (early 19th century). I don't believe these were colored or painted. Wear and dirt look pretty natural.
Dwight Brown Posted March 7, 2024 Report Posted March 7, 2024 Eric Meyer finetuning@aol.com John Dilworth. https://johndilworthviolins.co.uk/contact/jedilworth54@gmail.com These guys might have an idea. DLB

Mark Caudle Posted March 8, 2024 Report Posted March 8, 2024 I think the ones with the mother of pearl inserts in the end are later - sometime in 19th century.
