Chemical importing?

Hey all,

I've been in the search for some chemicals for varnishing that are hard to get in my part of the world (US). More specifically, I'm looking for Shellsol d70 and methoxypropanol, both of which can't be purchased here easily...

Does anyone here in the states have any experience with chemical acquisition from other countries? What are the procedures and buying/shipping channels?

I'd like to know, because my 4:1 resin-oil varnishes are not usable without the proper solvents. Turpentine is out of the question. I need a slow evaporating solvent that will allow me to apply my heavy resin varnishes easily. Unless there's some kind of equivalent out there.

You might try a commercially available enamel paint drying retarder, used to slow solvent evaporation in automotive painting to get better "leveling" before the paint starts to "set up", or to prevent the fast solvent evaporation from cooling the surface enough that it attracts moisture when the humidity is high during painting. A pro automotive paint supplier will typically have such things.

Or

I used to get chemical products from Fisher Scientific, but they have now become much more difficult to deal with, because they got in big trouble when it was found that some recreational drug makers were using them for chemical supplies. Many things are still available from a company called Daigger though.

Did you ever find a source?

Hello,

As per my experience you can start by researching chemical suppliers abroad that ship to the US. Ensure compliance with import regulations and check if the chemicals are restricted.  They have reputable suppliers, verify their credentials, and inquire about shipping methods and costs. Communicate clearly about your specific solvent needs, emphasizing slow evaporation for resin varnishes.
