I’m glad to hear that news of our auction is reaching people. A little about us - the Chicago Violin Auction started as an idea to be a marketplace for trade buyers. Whereas violin-specific auction houses in the United States seemed inaccessible and associated with larger retail brands, we wanted to bring a no-frills auction to market. The divide between retail auction, pseudo-trade auction, and local auction seemed vast, evermore so with the closing of the musical instrument department at Skinner. Thus, the Chicago Violin Auction was conceived, and we are happy to announce our first sale on Dec 8 of ~75 instruments and bows from the collection of a former Downtown Chicago violin shop. Not sure on who the auctioneer is but I heard from a local who keeps up with these things that the listing are from the old music shop that used to be on Michigan Avenue quite a few years ago. Some gal got the old inventory and has been reaching out to several appraisers and auction houses to unload some of the lots. Original owner there was Jim. He was a great guy to talk to but I forget exactly when he retired and moved out. Had to be at least 6 or so years now or maybe more. Likely more because I've not worked downtown since 2016 when I retired. I used to stop by when I would go to the symphony because the shop was a short walk from the concert hall. Always heard he had collected a bunch of instruments over the years and he'd talk your ear off about his guitars. I would buy a few strings or small things here and there to give him a sale. He liked to talk a lot when you'd go into his shop and had great stories about meeting musicians and travelling to Spain. But sadly so many of the instruments he had for sale were not worth the price he wanted and some needed a lot of work to be playable. He had a nice clerk there named Annie or maybe Amy or something like that. Would have been great to see Jim before he closed up. And too bad a new owner didn't take over in that spot. There's nothing like it downtown anymore. Good luck to the new auction house. Hopefully some buyers interested in repair projects can save some of the instruments from going to waste.
SJW Posted November 21, 2024 Report Posted November 21, 2024 Thank you for creating this resource. Makes it too easy to spend more time than I should looking at the listings.

I am also curious about the listings. My friends know I'm more of a hobbyist builder and repair person when it comes to violins and that I like to keep an eye out for good deals to work on. When they hear about things like this from people they know who are more part of the in crowd I'm grateful they share the info with me. A friend who knows one of the people who has been helping the new owner with appraisals and trying to get sales said they've been moving into a new shop just North of downtown. Not sure of the details because i didnt think to ask at the time. Thank you for making these great auction lists. It's very much appreciated and helpful.

Our catalog is currently online and live for viewing, with bidding set to commence on November 28th. This marks an important step in making our auctions a recurring event and a vibrant experience for the trade community - many have expressed interest in gathering for larger, future auctions here in Chicago, much like what had happened in Boston in the past.
