Chevalier - The Movie

Has anyone seen Chevalier, from Searchlight Pictures? A fascinating story, of Joseph Bologne... The only threads I could find were from 20 years or so ago, xania? 

What did you think?  The actor spent quite a bit of time practicing violin, always good to hear...:-) Surprise no comments so far? 92% on Rotten Tomatoes!

Haven't seen it yet but my reaction to the trailer I've seen is that it appears way "over Hollywood-ed". But, trailers often look that way, so I'm still hoping the movie does a decent job of portraying this incredibly interesting individual.

I've never known Hollywood to produce anything other than accurate biographies. Especially Moses.

Being it's the weekend somewhere I started watching stuff about him and came across this recording of this ARRANGED violin concerto! Huh uh. Now I'll be suspicious of every single recording of him, not knowing who I'm hearing

I didn't see the movie but did see a clip where Chevalier is dueling Mozart... very cringey if you ask me. I was dissuaded from watching the full movie by that clip.

I saw the movie. Movie making about string players has really gone downhill in the past 50 years - that's for sure.

 

Anyhow, it's a fictionalized account.

I think there are about three words too many in that sentence...

Altgeiger - I was thinking specifically of two old movies:

1. 1946, "Deception" with Paul Henried playing the cellist. Notable was the performance of some of Erich Corngold's Cello Concerto, which reportedly had Henried sitting there with two cellists behind him, one fingering the the notes and another doing the bowing through the empty sleeves of his jacket for the closeups. The dubbed sound was performed by Eleanor Aller. I could not tell he was not actually playing, although the pros on Cello Chat have assured me they could.

2. 1954, "Rhapsody" with Vittorio Glassman as the violinist. I remember how much he really appeared to be playing. Elizabeth Taylor was the female lead.

I may have them hidden somewhere in my basement garage, but I can't recall if they are VHS or DVD.

Rhapsody was pretty impressive movie string playing. I also liked the main theme — it fit the violin well and made a nice little encore piece. I never saw Deception. 

Among the worst I ever saw was Master and Commander. My wife will forgive a lot to look at Russell Crowe, but even she couldn't watch the feigned string playing.
