Using data from past sales, including auction sales, Claire is absolutely correct in that her verbal appraisal value for a Poggi can be supported (by sales, even public ones). I believe auction sale record for a Poggi violin is a bit over $300K, with more than one sale in the 200K + range.  Sought after maker, especially so in the asian market.

Absolutely, we sold a Poggi viola about 3 years ago at around $240k and I was aware at the time that the price was quite conservative. This based on a lot of research, conferring with colleagues etc.

That’s interesting, I would’ve never thought that a Poggi Viola can go for $300k. Does it also have to do with the fact that he only built 41 Violas?

Rarity does have something to do with demand, but function is important as well. If you watch carefully, violas of a usable professional size often realize higher sales than fiddles made by the same maker (but may come to sales room or auctions less frequently)... BUT...  if you reread what I wrote, the sale over 300K at auction was for a violin, not a viola ... and Martin's sale was for a viola (which does probably make the price a conservative one, all factors being equal)...so I say again; "supportable verbal appraisal".

Poggi is one of the hottest 20th c makers... even Sacconi who was a real genius is way behind price wise. although I always found Poggi's violins somewhat "cold" looking. I guess that's what absolute perfection looks like...
