wooden
Hello. I have this violin for identification. Can anyone help?. It is big 362mm. But the ribs are very narrow (from 27mm tapering to 25 at the heel). The purfling is painted and I think the original reddish varnish has been removed almost completely. The fluting of the scroll stops slightly before the pegbox. The lower rib is one piece. I'd appreciate any information which can lead to any date, school... Thanks in advance. Blank face
Probably Salzkammergut, with a small chance being English IMO. Unfortunately the area beneath the button is mostly lost, but the slightly fading and wobbly purfling line looks like it was done in the Salzkammergut. Can you show the lower block? wooden
Hi. Thank you very much for your quick reply. Here are some photos. Could you give an approximate age? Do you think the ribs have been lowered or maybe they were originally built low?
jacobsaunders
Should one go with BF’s these that it were Salzkammergut, then the blocks & linings would be a later addition, and lack of a through neck would make it post 1820ish
tetler
How does one differentiate Salzkammergut violins from those from Vogtland?

Blank face
The scroll seems to be grafted and I think I’m seeing the platform of a former throughneck under the upper block.
tetler
Why isn't this Vogtland then?

Model and scroll both look a bit odd for Vogtland in my eyes, also the particular golden-orange varnish; otherwise I agree with Jacob that it can be difficult to tell them apart. GeorgeH
The top plate appears to have had pins in the top and bottom, but I don’t see evidence of pins in the blocks now. Does that tell us anything?

Thanks! I can see how the scroll and model look a bit unusual. Are the painted purflings part of the equation? I can't remember having seen a Vogtland violin with painted purflings
