Wills34 Posted September 28, 2022 Report Posted September 28, 2022 (edited) This is my moms old violin that she inherited from her grandpa a long time ago. I am wondering if it is authentic and if it is, what is its value? (Not looking to sell just curious of my family history) Edited October 20, 2022 by Wills34

Strad O Various Jr. Posted September 28, 2022 Report Posted September 28, 2022 its a cheap violin, with fake label, that would take hundreds of dollars to repair and put in playing condition, you could hang it on the wall, if you chose to repair it, it won't be worth more than the repairs cost but if the sentimental value is important enough to you it might be worth it

Spelman Posted September 28, 2022 Report Posted September 28, 2022 @Wills34, please forgive Jacob's curtness regarding your instrument. Many, many people post pictures of their relatives'/ancestors' instruments and the vast majority are mostly worth sentimental value only. As the years go by, the answers to these queries have gotten shorter and blunter. It looks like you have a violin from somewhere in Germany or the former Czechoslovakia (I am not enough of an expert to ID exactly the region) of which there were literally millions made. When new, the violin was towards the lower end of the price scale and unfortunately appears to have suffered some serious damage rendering the value close to zero. Sorry for not having much good news regarding monetary value but it is something that has been in your family for years and hopefully brought joy to its owners. You can't put a dollar figure on that.
Frederik Posted December 4, 2022 Report Posted December 4, 2022 I have a similar instrument. It was build in Czechoslovakia in the year 1925. It has also the inscription "Jacobus Stainer in Absam ... etc. " So it's a copy of course. But a good copy of a good instrument is also a good instrument. Mine is in good condition and very playable. I like the sound, it's much better than cheap modern instruments. If my house was on fire, and i could save one object, it would be this violin. So take you instrument to a builder, ask for advise and if possible start playing it. That's its purpose. Play music that enjoys those around you. Then the violins value will be priceless. Good luck.
