Paul Jombar’s instruments

Hello!  I hope everyone is well.

Im looking for some more information on Paul Jombar and perhaps a general valuation of his instruments.  I’ve been reading he’s mostly known for his bow workshop where he had bows ghost-built by a number of famous French makers.

I ask because I came across what’s being sold as a Paul Jombar cello at my local string shop (a reputable one that I have an existing relationship with).  It sounds very beautiful and is an upgrade over my Dieudonne, but I’m uncertain about the selling price.

They are asking about 50000 CDN (approx 38500 USD).  I see a cello went for about 24500 at auction about ten years ago but I want to find out more about him/his workshops/his reputation as a luthier more than an archetier.

Thank you!

Amahl

We've had several violins. I like them....they're well made with a nice (dark red) varnish and more personal than similar makers, in a good way, with good inspiration. I have not sold a cello but auction prices, especially older, don't really mean much since they are often wholesale and auction instruments can often need quite a bit of work to get them up to modern standards.

Without seeing the instrument, the price seems fine if is is what it's supposed to be and in good shape.

Most of the bows I have seen with his brand have actually been made by other French makers and branded with his shop stamp, which is fine, but I don't think of him as a real bow maker.

Thank you!  I plan to trial the instrument and will take some photos if you have the time to look at them.  It is in very nice shape and like you said, a really lovely, red varnish.

Jombar cellos can be excellent. I know of a principal cellist of one of the top US orchestras that's been using one as his main instrument for years. He's had the possibility of using and buying some of the top cellos in the world, but the Jombar keeps getting used regularly.

I can also think of a top violin soloist who's name is associated with a couple of Strads and a Del Gesu, who made several recordings on his Jombar violin instead of his prized Cremonese stuff.

Any relation to Gom Jabbar?

I get the point...but I will forego responding with an off-topic witticism to avoid being a distraction to those (and I am quite seriously referring to yourself here, and others) who have the knowledge and experience to contribute to the conversation...Now that I've gotten started in another thread, I should note that I unfortunately also have trouble resisting self-referential paradoxes lol.
