Seidel Strad at Tarisio

So I am returning Tarisio customer... bought a few fiddles from them sold a few. I view most of their lots... but it has been a very disspointing experience couple of times now I have tried to view the Seidel Strad just to receive a polite refusal: "it is not in the office" - That's a good one. Meanwhile I know a few of my friends "official" dealers have just seen it...

To be fair, they were kind enough to send me a 20 page colour brochure with the letter post, with a large section on its role in Hollywood (it featured in “the wizard of oz” apparently). My reflex was to look for a condition report, which I didn’t find. As a matter of fact, I hadn’t been thinking of buying a Strad this year. Another time perhaps:)

I guess it’s not worth mentioning that they had a full time job inviting every “long time customer” who wants to see and play it.

Manpower is probably not the problem. The commission from this instrument certainly justifies paying for a full time effort just for this one fiddle, and I'm sure they have someone on it around the clock. The bottleneck is probably just the amount of time in a day.

In the past Tarisio has seemed willing to show most instruments to anyone, but in this case it just might not be logistically possible accommodate everyone, even all of their regular customers.

Well I can't even get the condition report ha ha, let alone a viewing / trial.  :D

They want to speak with me on the phone first and understand my interest better first.

Tell them that you are Obersturmbannführer from Maestronet, that should be more than enough:)

Wasn't the violin in Germany yesterday ....? It was also in London for a while and I think there were quite a few other viewings.

In my experience Tarisio are very happy to show such violins to anyone who takes a serious interest, but this violin has been travelling around a lot.

Perhaps that was the story this past weekend when I was there but back in March my good friend and a dealer from London saw the violin the same day I was given another polite refusal... We had Margaritas and laugh afterwards...

Wow, we've got a couple of serious one-percenters here.  I wonder how long Tarisio will keep extending it?

One more bid and it's an auction record for strad with fees included

OK, looks like it went for $13,000,000 plus fees, to the original first bidder, after 5 extensions.  The door just slammed shut.

Those two bidders were sniping each other like it was eBay, for a while.

Is $15.34M a record?

I think the lady blunt was sold for $15.9M

I know!!  Once it went down to 20 seconds!

I was looking at unsold lots and I swear there was a few minutes left.  I went to check the Strad and the page stopped loading.  I tried the auction link again (twice) and got this: "connect failed: cannot assign requested address".   On the third try it worked and the Strad showed completed at 3:15 EST for $13M.

Not a record but it certainly did well...

Yup, I can get to it again, too.  Confirmed on the $15,340,000.

Maybe the hellier will do better

Yup, a very respectable Strad, and it's beautifully decorated.  Maybe Rue and I will get in a battle over that one.  ;)
