SeSlack
I'm wondering, how can you tell if your cello sound post is in a safe position? I know there is a location where it could potentially cause a sound post crack but I'm wondering where that is and how to measure it? Thanks! duane88
I would consider outside or inside of the bridge foot dangerous, and perhaps too far back from the bridge as somewhat dangerous. If you don't know how to measure these things you should consider a visit to a luthier.
Wood Butcher
It's not as simple as the position, the tension of the post will matter a lot too. That said, there are tons of student instruments in use with posts in totally the wrong place, too tight, too loose, made from some random hardwood etc. I suspect they aren't all developing sound-post cracks as a result. nathan slobodkin
Yeah. Fit and tension are probably more involved in cracks than placement but weird placement might be an indicator that the technician is inexperienced. The fit can only be seen by removing the rigging and tension can only be judged by feel. Putting in or adjusting a post is something many amateurs think is easy but they are wrong. FiddleDoug
Dangerous position? How about laying loose in the instrument?
