P J Lester
I am wondering, is this dark area 'antiquing' or age related patina?
nathan slobodkin
Need to see more of the violin. It certainly has a generous helping of rosin/ crud built up but may also have had an antiqued finish when new.
Andreas Preuss
On some old violins the antiquing is rather simple. Markneukirchen makers used ‘Setzerbeize’ to be stomped into the still soft varnish, mostly around the edges. French makers made often ‘la moustache’ which is a blackened area between bridge and fingerboard. Yours could be the latter, but there is a chance that it has naturally enlarged with colophany dust and dust.
deans
Yeah, I think its a combination of both. I believe a lot of the dings are "antiquing".
