Ken_N
Looking in my history I found it: https://u1lib.org/book/5403843/f284b3 The link just came up out of the blue. I wasn't looking for it. I saw the name and book cover. edit: Ahh. The Library no longer has it! I have to get it off MEL so it won't be a long loan. Thanks for the link, I have the book but having the (free) pdf on the computer is handy Taking a quick look it seems to me everything is fine and legible, not messed up as you said in your previous post: ("But the writing, even the numbers are all a scrambled mess of scribbles and nonsense!") ("I also have trouble decided what instrument is what. I know the Grancino viola for sure, it is very pretty and distinctive. The other very symmetrical orange violin with pinched corners, page 153? The ones on pages 132-139 are Guadagnini?") On page 153 there is a David Tecchler and on page 132-139 there are two Guadagnini, the first fron Milan and the second from Parma. Ken_N
Thanks Davide! Maybe I should try to download again. Being able to read the text and numbers would be nice. David Tecchler? It's pretty nice. I got the Guadagnini ones right. Edit. Tried again. Still corrupted. Photos and the front cover are fine.

Andrew tkinson
If I was to draw a violin it would maybe look like this old home-made instrument I have. To save me doing the drawing here are a couple of pictures. I hope nobody minds me breaking the competion rules. Here is the scroll
Mel S.
I've taken part in the competition and want to introduce myself now. I'm from Germany and a silent reader of the pegbox section of this forum so far. About five years ago I began restoring violins. It started with my grandma's old Markneukirchen 3/4 fiddle with a huge soundpost crack, front in two halves, an open seam in the back and parts of the back and the lower rib missing that I saved from the dust bin. It's nearly finished and I've also brought several other violins back to life till now. If I was younger I would probably attend violin making school, but so it's my beloved spare time job. Thank you all for the knowledge shared here. I learn a lot. And a happy and successful new year to you!
Ken_N
The one I did the outline of is on page 182 of the Rattray book. I couldn't remember what page, so I scrolled through, and it is near the end! I have no idea what it is. Some of the drawings showed who the artists are! I'm not one of them. Hats of to them! But not just them. I applaud anyone who submitted a drawing, and opened themselves up to possible criticism. I don't know why people would do that; but it happens on some forums. I don't go on them! Some of the simple ones even have attitude. Like Jim's MEAN del Gesu inside a cello. Yesterday I made outlines of Montagnana and Gofriller violins, using the purfling lines of the fronts and backs with tracing paper. They are almost exactly the same, but they changed the corners, and the Montagnana has a somewhat wider upper bout. I'm pretty sure that the del Gesu patterns are just about the same; maybe a wider center bout on some of the models. One would think that since violins are so similar, they would be easier to draw. MikeC
I like them all. I'll pick this one as my favorite because the surface texture is so well done. Comment on my own is I think I'm better at drawing hands than violins although my thumb looks a little wonky and my F holes are way too big. Happy new year everyone. Haha, Thanks Ken. I drew them on Christmas eve, so I gift wrapped the violin in a cello. I like to draw what I'm making even though I'm not a very good artist. Shaky hands don't help. I draw because it helps me train my eyes. F-holes: I was trying for a Strad-ish f-hole. If I could pick my favorite f-hole it would be an early Strad with a little Peter of Venice flavor. However, my hands would not obey me for this effort. A fun game. Thanks for setting it up Andreas! Cheers, Jim
MikeC
Only one drawing allowed but now that it's over.. When I was in 2nd grade I started drawing contour lines around things. I think they thought I was strange.

I can imagine it hanging on a wall in a picture frame. For my post I didn't try to draw a specific violin. It's rather a conglomerate of those violins hanging around here. I think it looks almost like a cello with too big F-holes. Hopefully I managed to get the F-holes a little bit Guarnerish. I like those.
