classicalmusic
Hello fellow sleuths! Hope all is well! I have an interesting old violin. A luthier friend is going to restore it for me. It needs a lot of work, but it seems to be something nice. Its seems 18th century German, Markneukirchen or Klingenthal…. Any guesses? jacobsaunders
Another one with a wood screw through the button, seems to be a special American restoration method
classicalmusic
Yeah, thats going to be all removed and fixed in the proper way!
Brad Dorsey
Jacob: Would you also attribute the smallness of the button to an American restorer, or were violins of this type sometimes originally made with buttons this small? jacobsaunders
the buttons of fiddles of this type are typically fairly large. I has been wittled away by the primate who "repaired" the neck

jacobsaunders
I would have thought it first half of 19th C
Rue
Is it my imagination, or is that the worst pegbox repair ever?

The scotch tape holding the scroll on is absolutely not an American style repair. We use duct tape in cases like that.

Tape just holding it on for time being lol Well in that case, maybe thats correct.
Violadamore
The grain of the back is beautiful, IMHO, and the belly spruce isn't bad either.
FiddleDoug
It appears to be another one from the Kindling Bros. shop. If any asks what it is, you can reply "It's Kindling". Good luck with the restoration. I know it will take a while, but, if you can, post before and after pictures when it's done.

Violinfinder
If I may ask how much did it cost to restore this violin? Anyone have other suggestions on restorers particularly those in Northern California?

classicalmusic
It’s been a long process but it’s finally restored! Hope you enjoy seeing the results. We were thinking Meisel family from around 1800. It’s a very beautiful and charming violin! The tone is very full, warm, and balanced!
