l33tplaya
https://www.classicfm.com/discover-music/instruments/violin/luthier-dishwasher-violin-torture-instagram/ I must be missing something; this seems incredibly stupid, sort of the insane art that was really trash, popular in the 80's or so. Or has classic fm stooped to new lows?
Violadamore
Dada was there first. The word that you're groping for is "nihilism", which I do not consider a constructive philosophic basis.
Deo Lawson
Welcome to the cultural endgame. First we had Bach, then Mozart, then romantics, then jazz and rock, and now we just gave up and put our fiddles in the wash
Nick Allen
There is a weird consensus that violins and their kin are some kind of precious untouchable idea/thing. I commend those who look at things from new angles or do weird things with everyday stuff. I don't know if I should emphasize "everyday stuff" or not, though. A lot of strange visceral reactions around the net about this subject. I like when people sometimes come along and stir things up, while exposing the weird game/notion (that usually has no basis) that evolves within a culture or industry. But that's just me. glebert
This reminds me of the "cellos in the swimming pool" art installation a while back. https://www.classicfm.com/discover-music/cellos-in-swimming-pool/

Personally I just find waste abhorrent. Why should junk fiddles exist in the first place, for us to turn into abominations of raw creativity? A tree had to be cut down... Tools had to be made and mouths fed... The time and effort of dozens or even hundreds of people had to come together to create this useless thing whose only purpose is to be put in a washing machine. I guess the art is just the front for all that hidden waste which is why I suspect a lot of people feel the way I do. Not to mention it spits in the face of what past people considered valuable. Sometimes that can be OK but a lot of people don't like that either.

Have you ever walked to the checkout of a supermarket, past all of the little plastic novelties, and though to yourself, "This kind of thing had to be pitched, approved, budgeted and designed, tooling had to be made, manufactured, someone probably got fired/promoted in the process, logistics sorted out, buyers secured, and staged here." All for a $.99 unlicensed SpongeBob bubble wand in a blister pack with a cardboard backing that's in the clearance bin...

That's a whole other issue, how the global economy currently operates: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-08-12/fast-fashion-turning-parts-ghana-into-toxic-landfill/100358702?utm_source=pocket-newtab The issue here isn't waste, it's vicious, hateful, pointless destruction masquerading as art. What it's really rooted in are the same impulses that cause vandalism, such as graffiti and window-smashing. At bottom, it's messing with people, in a cowardly fashion. The guy with the dishwasher has anger issues.
matesic
Does every artifact have a right to exist for ever? Should superfluous violins all be hung on walls like hunting trophies, or just quietly burned or buried out of the public eye? Should they have been created in the first place? Intentionally or not, the "artist" has absolutely succeeded in provoking controversy and debate about a superficially trivial issue that does have implications for the present human and global condition (smiley face deleted). Rothwein
One of the most fascinating documentary news programs I've ever seen showed the automotive industry of Ghana. The village blacksmiths earned a living creating not trinkets, but nuts and bolts. By hand. Those who could afford to purchased small engines, steel bar, and sheet metal, and built trucks from plans very like those in Popular Mechanics magazine in the 70s-early 90s. An artifact as such has no "right" to exist. Artists, however, have a right to be paid for their work. Not necessarily for the quality of their work as art, as that is in the eye of the beholder, but for labor and materials. That these materials are somehow devalued by their use as art and, once reclaimed are sold for huge profit, I find reprehensible.

However one feels about any of it, he succeeded. If that was the intention in the first place, that is.
