Kevin Patz Posted August 4, 2021 Report Posted August 4, 2021 (edited) Found this at an estate sale. The owner said his father made it, I think he modified it. Some name written inside but can't make it out looks like I may be Schafer. Edited August 5, 2021 by Kevin Patz More photos
Brad Dorsey Posted August 4, 2021 Report Posted August 4, 2021 Unless the father was working in Germany around 100 years ago, he didn’t make it.
Ron1 Posted August 4, 2021 Report Posted August 4, 2021 Maybe his father installed the fingerboard. Gotta love the tail-piece!
Kevin Patz Posted August 5, 2021 Author Report Posted August 5, 2021 I won't be offended if this gets a few laughs. Must have been some Hill Billy engineering going on here! I am mostly curious about the binding also and the plump rounded back? I don't play or pay much for these but find them often and intrigued by them, and want to learn the attributes of quality in an antique violin. Thanks!
Strad O Various Jr. Posted August 5, 2021 Report Posted August 5, 2021 Believe it or not that fancy inlay is usually found on the cheaper models, and yes, it is common for the back to not have the herringbone like the top
