Aewqainc Posted July 28, 2021 Report Posted July 28, 2021 Hi all i have got in this very unique and interesting 4/4 violin, it’s etched all over and is very different to violins I have had in. just wondering if anyone knew anything about this instrument as it was found in a bone yard clearance
Rue Posted July 28, 2021 Report Posted July 28, 2021 Looks like someone used it as an art project...as in 'found art' perhaps.
PaganiniGuitar Posted July 28, 2021 Report Posted July 28, 2021 The worst case of antiqueing a violin or this was used in some horrendous cult ritual (I see faces in the lower bout), and now you resurrected this from the grave, now the curse is on you! Serious who would do that to an instrument?

Aewqainc Posted July 28, 2021 Author Report Posted July 28, 2021 Yeah it’s pretty scary and weird, never seen something like this, I restore violins but not sure I want to do this one! but to be fair it doesn’t have a crack or split, even though it looks like this! will put up pictures when it’s done as needs fingerboard and fully set up.
Rue Posted July 28, 2021 Report Posted July 28, 2021 It also could have been used as a prop for a spooky movie, or play at some point. As to who would do such a thing? Likely the same sort of people who would do this : http://charlottesvilleschools.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Painted-Violins-1.jpg
stringcheese Posted July 28, 2021 Report Posted July 28, 2021 No, those are waaay better. Honestly it looks like a low end trade violin that wasn't worth much before it was butchered.

jezzupe Posted July 28, 2021 Report Posted July 28, 2021 every time he scored a kill he put another notch in the fiddle

In Jewish religion they have what’s called the dybbuk where an item captures an evil spirit. There is an interesting violin piece devoted to this ritual. Safari - Jul 28, 2021 at 4:08 PM.pdf

Marty Kasprzyk Posted July 28, 2021 Report Posted July 28, 2021 I believe this violin might have been made by the well respected Australian violin maker Peter Goodfellow. He shows how he carves his violin plates in the Youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2n1W5THyGQ
Ron1 Posted July 29, 2021 Report Posted July 29, 2021 This is unmistakably a David Burgess violin. It's just that he didn't get to put the finishing touches on it after hoggin' it out with his sawzall.
Brad Dorsey Posted July 29, 2021 Report Posted July 29, 2021 The word "distressed" first came to my mind, but I think "tortured" is more appropriate.
